IT is a joyful Ramadan for residents of Block B in the Kampung Melayu flats in Air Itam, Penang, as a new lift has finally been installed.
Air Itam assemblyman Wong Hon Wai said the 2,000-odd residents could use the new elevator which had a capacity of 15 people, that was completed a few days after the start of the fasting month.
“The state government has spent RM717,000 to change three lifts in Block B, in which two others will be upgraded after Ramadan.
“The upgrading works were supposed to be completed in May but were delayed as the contractor had problems getting approval from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH),” he added.
“When I came for an inspection on June 14, I gave a deadline to the contractors to urge them to expedite the upgrading works,” he told reporters during a visit to the flats in Air Itam recently.
Wong said the approval from DOSH came a day before the start of Ramadan.
“I advised the contractor to continue the work on two other lifts after Ramadan to prevent any inconvenience,” he said.
Kampung Melayu Flats village development and security committee secretary Sharifah Fuziah Syed Masir, 62, thanked Wong for monitoring the matter.
“The lifts in Block B often break down when carrying passengers. There was an instance when a number of schoolchildren were trapped and cried in the lift,” she said.
“Fortunately with the new lift, residents need not worry about these problems anymore,” she said.
Earlier, Wong also launched the Ramadan bazaar at the Kampung Melayu flats.
Hundreds of people were spotted looking for tantalising dishes to break fast from the 115 stalls there.
